(18-02-2011) PROJECT UPDATE - Fire station, Antwerp
18.02.2011 / Building documentation delivered.
The building documentation and construction drawings for the refurbishment of a former office building into a fire station have been delivered. The existing building consists of a slender concrete column-and-beam structure and an entirely glazed curtain-façade. In order to bring the building up to par with the functional requirements of a fire station, and with present day comfort and energy levels, we had to carefully puncture the structure and replace the existing façade with a light but thoroughly insulated new façade. Although the interior of the building is completely changed, the beauty and preciseness of the concrete structure remains visible and hence will remain an identifying factor in the future atmosphere of the building. While the new façade has a minimal glass surface, its stratification into structuring and plating elements provides it with a lightness reminiscent of the original elevation. Construction will start before summer.
